I plan to take care of 15 or so acres of field which is flat ground with loads of goldenrod. I want to keep it a field by mowing from time to time. I want to smooth the ground for easy walking and smooth riding on the tractor. Small shrubs are present here and there. What implements should I use to accomplish this? I'm in no hurry to get my field worked on.
If I bought a John Deere 4410, would this handle the work? What size brushhog would I use to keep it mowed? Should I consider the 4610? I never owned a tractor before, so I really don't want to start with a large tractor.
Thanks

I would think some good implements for you would be a 5' bushhog and a boxblade if you want to level land or push up brush. With 15 acres I would go with at least a 30 - 50hp tractor. That should be plenty to start out with in time you will figure out what else you would need. ....

Wayne If you are just planning on field mowing I would say the 4410 and a 6' rotary mower would more than do the job. If you mow it to 4-5" before it gets over a foot tall. Small brush will not bother you once you have mowed them. However if you are concerned the first time or so you can back up to small brush 2" or so and set the rotary mower down on them a little at a time. Stump will get shredded enough so it won't bother a tire. P.S. WEAR GLASSES DOING/WATCHING this operation.
If you only plan on mowing 1-2 times a year a 5' mower may be the better chioce.
The 4410 will do almost any thing you want if you use your head. I probably really stretch the limits of what the engineers recommend and the safety freaks would fall over if they saw some of the stuff I have accomplished with a little hyd power, traction and thinking the action thru before trying. ....

Hi Harvey -
I have a 4410 too, and just took off the snowblower yesterday and put the front-end loader on for the first time. Can't wait until the ground gets solid enough for me to get out into the woods with it!
Anyway, you mentioned that you can do just about anything with your 4410. Can you tell me what you do with yours? Thank you.
PS - I'm looking into getting a brush hog this summer. and, I got to use the chain-on pallet forks yesterday to move the snowblower that I put onto a pallet. That was some kind of handy!

The 4410 will handle the 6ft brush cutter. A seven foot would require a larger machine, a 5xxx series. The larger the deck the greater the chance of bending it and the heavier it needs to be. ....
